GADSEN, Ala. – Austin Peay State University women's golf team struggled during the first round of the Chris Banister, being played at Mindbreaker/Heartbreaker at the Silver Lakes Golf Course.
The Lady Govs shot an opening-round 326 and stand in eighth place after Sunday's opening round. Troy is the leader on the par-72, 5998-yard layout, shooting an opening-day 305. Morehead State is in second at 308 while another Ohio Valley Conference foe—and host—Jacksonville State is fifth place (316). Another OVC opponent, Belmont, is in 10th place (331).
"We didn't play well today, certainly not like we are capable of," APSU coach Sara Robson. "It is a very difficult course and most of the girls left bad breaks get to them mentally."
Only two Lady Govs, senior Meghan Mueller and junior Jessica Cathey, broke 80—both shots 78s to sit tied for 17th overall.
Sophomore Morgan Kauffman owned APSU's next best score (84) while Morgan Gardner shot an 86 and freshman AnnaMichelle Moore was at 88. Sophomore Amber Bosworth, playing as an individual, shot a 90.
"Meghan played well today but she didn't finish well," Robson said. "Bogeys got her late (last three holes).
"Jessica had a couple of bad holes that cost her."
The three-day tourney will continued Monday, with the final 18 holes slated for Tuesday on the Robert Trent Jones Trail Course.
