Third-seeded Govs open up OVC Championship play against Morehead State

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University men's tennis team opens up Ohio Valley Conference Championship play when it takes on Morehead State, 2 p.m., Friday, in the opening round at the Centennial SportsPlex in Nashville.

Austin Peay completed the regular season with a 12-7 record, and a 7-2 mark in OVC play, which was good for third place in the OVC. Last weekend, the Govs dropped matches to Jacksonville State (4-3) and Tennessee Tech (5-2), snapping a seven-match conference winning streak.

Morehead State (6-15, 4-5 OVC) enters the weekend fresh off a Saturday, 5-2 win against SIU Edwardsville.  The Eagles are led by Richie Kruunenberg, who earned a 7-2 OVC record at the No. 1 singles slot and holds down the No. 1 doubles position with partner Gabriel Ruiz.  Kruunenberg and Ruiz have put together an impressive 4-2 record in OVC play.

The Govs and the Eagles have already met this season, with Austin Peay claiming a 4-1 victory on March 27, in Clarksville.  On that afternoon, the senior trio of Dimitar Ristovski, Aleksas Tverijonas and Iago Seffrin all claimed singles victories and the Govs were able clinch the match victory when sophomore Montenegro earned a win at the No. 5 position.

If the Govs are able to ground the Eagles in the first round, they will earn a rematch with Tennessee Tech at 2 p.m., Saturday at the Centennial SportsPlex.
