BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Austin Peay State University's softball team ended its run of scoreless innings, Wednesday, but couldn't come away with a victory, as they dropped 7-0 and 5-1 finals to Samford.

Carly Matton's second home run of the season, with one out in the top of the fourth inning of the second game, ended a run of 33 1/3 innings without scoring a run for the Governors (6-31) – the longest such streak since the 2000 season.

Austin Peay had a chance to add on to Mattson's run, with Brea Dickson and Erica Inagaki recording hits around the second out of the inning, but the Bulldogs (28-17) got the final out on a hard smash by Kacy Acree to end the inning.

Samford had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run single by Lexi Higgins, with the Bulldogs adding their final three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Danielle Liermann led the Govs with two hits in the night cap.

In Game 1, Austin Peay got off to a promising start with Acree opening the game by reaching on a Samford error and move to second base on an infield hit by Rikki Arkansas.

But the pair would be stranded there, with Samford getting the next three Govs in order to end the scoring threat.

The Bulldogs would take a 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning, on a two-run homer by Lexi Higgins, then add two unearned run in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth for their seven runs.

Austin Peay would have two other scoring chances in the opener -- coming in the fourth and sixth innings.

In the fourth, Niya Sparks opening the inning with a single, move to second on a sacrifice by Kendall Vedder, but advanced no further.

In the sixth, Sparks and Vedder reached on a one-out walk and single respectively, but were stranded, as the Govs left eight runs on base total in the contest.

The Govs return home this weekend for a pair of Ohio Valley Conference doubleheaders versus Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech
