Acree, Rackel supply power in Mardones win versus Jacksonville

Conway, S.C. – Austin Peay State University's Kelly Mardones pitched her first complete game of the season versus Jacksonville, Saturday at St. John Stadium in Day 2 of the Chanticleer Showdown, while Kacy Acree and Morgan Rackel hit two home runs each in defeating the Dolphins, 9-2, following a 6-2 loss to Coastal Carolina in the opener.

The Govs will conclude play at the showdown, 8:15 a.m., Sunday with a contest versus Radford.

Coastal Carolina 6,  Austin Peay 2

After a couple of scoreless innings to open the game, Austin Peay would break out on top of the Chanticleers (14-4) with a two-run homer by Danielle Liermann -- her sixth home run in the last four games.

Liermann and Kacy Acree would lead the Govs hitters with two hits each.

But that would be all the runs the Govs would score, with Coastal Carolina closing the game by scoring the game's final six runs – all coming on home runs.

Morgan Rackel (7-4) would take the loss, despite striking out 10.

Austin Peay 9, Jacksonville 2

After Austin Peay and Jacksonville (6-9) traded runs in the second inning, the Govs would start to pull away by scoring three times in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Acree, while Kelsey Gray scored the other run of the inning on a wild pitch.

That would be all the runs that Mardones (3-3) would need, as she limited the Dolphins to just two runs on five hits, while striking out four.

Acree would add her second home run of the game in the fourth inning, a solo shot, while Rackel made it 6-2 with a home run in the fifth inning.

Acree, Rackel and Danielle Liermann would finish the game with two hits each.

Rackel would closeout the games scoring with her second home run – a three-run blast – in the top of the seventh for the 9-2 final margin.

Stanfill Statements

On bouncing back from tough Game 1 loss

"It's always good to be able to bounce back after a loss. We hit into some hard-luck in the first game today but came out in Game 2 and had some quality at bats and were able to put some runs on the board."

On Mardones performance in the circle

"We were excited that Kelly were out and got a complete game under her belt. She went out and bounded her zones, got her ground balls, trusted her defense, and they responded and played well behind her."

On recent home run surge

"We are definitely a powerful team, but we're also a team that doesn't just try to hit home runs. We just talk about having quality at bats and squaring up on a ball and whatever comes from it is what it is. So when we get the home runs it's great and we celebrate them, but overall today I think in Game 2 we had quality at bats and just pounded the ball hard."
