Lancaster lurking near top of the leaderboard at the State Open

DICKSON, Tennessee—Austin Peay State University is well-represented at the 71st Tennessee State Open at Greystone Golf Club, with current Governor Austin Lancaster in second after the opening round of play.

A Hendersonville native, Lancaster carded an opening-round 64, one shot behind Hunter Walcott of Burns. Starting on No. 10, Lancaster birdied four straight holes starting on No. 11 to post a 33 on the back-nine, but he was even better on the front. He played bogey-free on the front-nine, including an eagle on No. 5 en route to a 31. He also was pushed by Chattanooga's Paul Apyan, who was paired with Lancaster and is one shot behind the rising senior after a first-round 65.

Lancaster wasn't the only Gov near the top of the leaderboard. Austin Peay Athletics Hall of Famer Grant Leaver shook off a difficult back-nine with a front-nine 30, carding birdies on six of nine holes and closing out his round with three straight birdies. The Center Hill native is tied for 15th with a 68.

Other players in the field with Austin Peay ties are former Govs Ben Glover (76) and Justin Metzger (78) and Jay Fox, who missed last year due to injury and carded a 77 on Tuesday.

Second-round action at Greystone begins for the Austin Peay contingent with Leaver off No. 1 at 9 a.m., Wednesday.
