As you've likely heard, we don't have any live-action contests to cover at LetsGoPeay.com right now. What we do have is free time; oodles and oodles of free time. Enough free time to swap oodles of emails with various people who would know to create a snapshot of the best athletes in Austin Peay men's tennis history. We throw it back to the 70's for the first time at the midway point, with a two-time OVC Player of the Year who comes from a land down under.
With a name like Gary Boss, you have almost no choice than to be one of the best at whatever it is you do. Luckily for us at Austin Peay, what Boss did was win tennis matches, all while sporting arguably the best hair in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Hailing from Sydney, Australia, Boss made an immediate impact when he arrived in Clarksville, helping lead the Governors to the 1974 OVC Men's Tennis Championship. In the No. 3 doubles position, Boss partnered with Mario Valle to knock off Middle Tennessee's No. 3 pairing and help secure the title.
After playing on the No. 3 singles line for his first two seasons, Boss made the jump to the No. 1 position for his final two seasons. The move paid off, as Boss brought home the OVC Singles Championship in his junior and senior seasons. This led to Boss being named the OVC Player of the Year in 1976 and 1977, making him the second in program history to take home back-to-back player of the year awards.
During the 1976 and 1977 seasons when Boss was playing as the Governors No. 1 in singles, he posted an incredible record of 24-9. During his four years as a Gov, Boss also racked up 45 career wins in doubles action. Boss wrapped up his career as a Governors by taking home the 1977 Joy Award, now known as the Legends Award, which is given to Austin Peay's most valuable senior student-athlete.
