As you've likely heard, we don't have any live-action contests to cover at LetsGoPeay.com right now. What we do have is free time; oodles and oodles of free time. Enough free time to swap oodles of emails with various people who would know to create a snapshot of the best athletes in Austin Peay women's tennis history. Taking the top spot in our countdown is one of the most decorated women's tennis players in not just Austin Peay history, but Ohio Valley Conference history.
The career of Lidia Yanes Garcia began in a way that no other women's tennis player in OVC history's career had ever begun – being named the OVC Player and Freshman of the Year in the same season. Yanes Garcia led the Governors with nine conference wins in her freshman season, compiling an overall singles record of 13-3. Yanes Garcia's conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year award in 2016 were the first by a Gov since the Vanja Tomic and Carolin Weikard won the awards in 2010.
In 2017, Yanes Garcia only got better, posting a record of 14-2 while playing exclusively in the No. 1 singles position. Yanes Garcia also posted a perfect 9-0 record in OVC play, making her one of three OVC women's tennis players to do so that season, but she was the only one who did it while playing in the top three spots in the lineup. At the end of the season, Yanes Garcia picked up her second-straight OVC Player of the Year award and was once again named a First-Team All-OVC selection.
Before her junior season ever began, Yanes Garcia had already made OVC history as one of ninth women's tennis players to be a two-time OVC Player of the Year. In 2018, Yanes Garcia did not disappoint, posting a 16-2 record in singles play that included a 16-match winning streak – which is the second-longest winning streak in program history. Despite playing with three different partners throughout the season, Yanes Garcia was phenomenal in doubles play as well, posting a mark of 16-8.
Yanes Garcia's stellar junior campaign led to her making OVC history, by winning her third-straight OVC Player of the Year award. Yanes Garcia also helped led the Govs to the OVC Tournament Championship match, where they fell to Eastern Kentucky to end her historic season.
In her senior season, Yanes Garcia posted a career-best singles record of 17-2, which included a 14-match winning streak – the fourth longest in program history. In doubles action, Yanes Garcia was teamed up with her twin sister, Claudia Yanes Garcia, the duo went 14-4 in the spring and ended the regular season on an 11-match winning streak. However, the biggest accomplishment of Yanes Garcia's 2019 season was leading the Governors to a perfect 20-0 regular season and a regular-season OVC Championship.
After picking up her fourth-straight First-Team All-OVC selection, Yanes Garcia led the Govs through Southeast Missouri in the OVC Tournament semifinals. In the championship against UT Martin, Yanes Garcia and her twin sister won the doubles match that clinched the doubles point to give the Governors a 1-0 lead. Then in singles play, Yanes Garcia's 6-2, 6-0 victory on the No. 2 line put the Govs up 3-0, before they eventually swept the match and won their first OVC Tournament Championship since 2010. A week later, Yanes Garcia was leading her match against Wake Forest in the first round of the NCAA Tournament when the Govs season and her career came to a close.
However, Yanes Garcia was not done receiving recognition for an incredible season and career, as she was one of 262 NCAA Division I student-athletes to earn NCAA Woman of the Year nomination. Then Yanes Garcia was named the 2018-19 OVC Women's Scholar-Athlete, recognizing her fine work both on and off the court. Finally, Yanes Garcia became the second women's tennis player to be awarded the Austin Peay Legend's Award, which is given to male and female student-athlete determined to be the department's "Most Valuable Senior Athlete," recognizing that student-athlete's contributions throughout their career.
