GOVS-TIGERS POSTGAME NOTES

FROM THE TOP

  • Austin Peay picked up its first win since it went on the road and defeated Sacramento State, 42-28, on Dec. 7, 2019, in the second round of the 2019 FCS Football Playoffs.
  • The Govs won their sixth-consecutive game contested at Fortera Stadium.
  • Austin Peay's previous home win was a 35-7 win against Eastern Illinois on Nov. 23, 2019.
  • Head coach Scotty Walden picked up his first win at Austin Peay.
  • The Governors picked up their 300th win as a program.

CAPTAINS/COIN TOSS

  • Kordell Jackson was the Governors captain for the second-straight game
  • Tennessee State won the toss and elected to receive the football to start the game.

SERIES UPDATE                                            

  • Austin Peay beat Tennessee State but still trails in the all-time series, 14-9.
  • The Govs are now 7-5 all-time against Tennessee State in Clarksville.
  • For the first time in the series history Austin Peay prevented Tennessee State from recording consecutive wins.

OFFENSIVE SPARKS

  • Brian Snead rushed for a career-high 227 yards and 3 touchdowns.
  • Snead is the first Governor to rush for 3 touchdowns in a single game since Kentel Williams ran for 3 TDs against UT Martin (11/9/19)
  • Snead is the first Gov to score 3 touchdowns of any type in a single game since Baniko Harley found the endzone three times at Sacramento State (12/7/19)
  • Snead is the first Austin Peay player to run for 200 yards in a single game since Kentel Williams ran for 203 yards at Morehead State (9/16/17).
  • Snead is the first Governor to run for a 70-plus yard touchdown since CJ Evan's 75-yard touchdown run against Central Arkansas (8/29/20) on the first play of the 2020 college football season.
  • Snead set the NCAA Division I FCS record for rushing yards in a quarter with 204 yards in the first quarter.
  • DeAngelo Wilson recorded 114 receiving yards – the 11th 100-yard receiving game of his career – and he is the first Governor with a 100-yard receiving game since his own 124-yard outing at Tennessee Tech, Feb. 21.
  • Austin Peay rushed for 4 touchdowns for the first time since Dec. 7, 2019 at Sacramento State.

DEFENSIVE STANDS                                         

  • Austin Peay's defense held Tennessee State to 3-of-17 on third-down conversions; this season the Governors have held their opponents to 24-of-67 (35.8 percent) on third-down.
  • The Govs defense recorded 13 tackles for loss, it is their second-straight week with double-digit tackles in the backfield
  • Austin Peay held Tennessee State to just 98 rushing yards, it is the second-consecutive week the Governors have held their opponent under 100 yards on the ground.
  • Jack McDonald recorded 11 tackles against Tennessee State, marking the fifth double-digit tackle game of his Austin Peay career; McDonald also recorded career-highs with 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
  • With his 11th career interception, nickelback Kordell Jackson moves into a five-way tie for fifth on the Austin Peay all-time interceptions list – Jackson is two picks away from catching Howell Flatt for fourth all-time.

SPECIAL TEAMS SPRINTS

  • Matt Rigney's 65-yard punt is the first 60-yard punt by a Governor since Devin Stuart's 65-yard boot at Jacksonville State (9/28/18).
  • Rigney punted 10 times against Tennessee State, he is the first Austin Peay punter with double-digit punts in a game since Ben Campbell punted 11 times against Eastern Kentucky (10/4/14).
  • Austin Peay punters have not punted into the end zone in 21 consecutive games. The Govs last touchback on a punt came off the foot of Jeremiah Oatsvall on Nov. 3, 2018 against Eastern Kentucky. Since that touchback, APSU punters have 121 punts without a touchback – 47 of those boots have stayed inside the 20-yard line.
