Postgame Notes: Govs vs. UT Martin

GOVS-SKYHAWKS POSTGAME NOTES

FROM THE TOP

  • Austin Peay is now 29-44-1 all-time in Homecoming contests.
  • The Governors are 3-2 all-time against UT Martin in Homecoming games.
  • Freshman Draylen Ellis threw for a career-high 305 yards and is the first Austin Peay quarterback to throw for 300-plus yards since JaVaughn Craig tossed for 322 yards against Tennessee State (11/5/2016) in his freshman season.

CAPTAINS/COIN TOSS

  • Kordell Jackson was the Governors captain for the fourth-straight game
  • Austin Peay won the toss and deferred; UT Martin elected to receive the ball to start the game.

SERIES UPDATE                                            

  • This was the 69th meeting between the Governors and Skyhawks.
  • Austin Peay is now 27-40-2 all-time against UT Martin.
  • The Govs are 16-22-1 all-time against UT Martin in Clarksville.
  • Austin Peay fell to UT Martin at home for the first time since October 17, 2015.

OFFENSIVE SPARKS

  • After throwing just one touchdown in his first two games, Ellis has tossed 10 passing touchdowns in his last two contests.
  • Redshirt junior Eugene Minter posted career-highs in receiving yards (97) and touchdowns (2).
  • After catching his first career touchdown last week, Jay Parker hauled in a touchdown for the second-straight contest.
  • Ahmaad Tanner ran for a career-high 105 yards, his best rushing performance since he ran for 104 yards at Tennessee Tech (11/4/2017) as a freshman. 
  • Tanner scored his first rushing touchdown since Nov. 16, 2019 at Murray State.
  • DeAngelo Wilson made four catches for 107 yards, posting the 12th 100-yard receiving game of his career – Wilson has recorded 100-receiving yards in all three games he has played in this spring.
  • Austin Peay was 3-3 on converting plays of third and eight; Ellis tossed for gains of 15, 26, and 20 and the Govs later scored touchdowns on each drive after converting a third and eight.

DEFENSIVE STANDS                                         

  • Austin Peay held UT Martin to just 77 rushing yards; the Governors have held three of their four opponents under 100 rushing yards this spring.
  • Averaging nine tackles for loss per game, Austin Peay made exactly nine stops behind the line of scrimmage against UT Martin; this is the first game this spring where the Govs haven't recorded double-digit tackles for loss.
  • Redshirt senior Matthew Gayle made a career-high nine tackles and a career-high two sacks.
  • Redshirt senior Terrell Vassel matched his career-high with 8 tackles.

SPECIAL TEAMS SPRINTS

  • Austin Peay punters have not punted into the end zone in 23 consecutive games. The Govs last touchback on a punt came off the foot of Jeremiah Oatsvall on Nov. 3, 2018 against Eastern Kentucky. Since that touchback, APSU punters have 132 punts without a touchback – 48 of those boots have stayed inside the 20-yard line.
