Postgame Notes: Govs vs. No. 13 Murray State

GOVS-RACERS POSTGAME NOTES

FROM THE TOP

  • Austin Peay won its fourth-straight game against Murray State, which is the Govs longest winning streak in the series since they won five-straight contests from 1964-68.
  • The Governors have won back-to-back games against top-15 ranked FCS opponents for the first time in program history.
  • Scotty Walden improves to 4-2 in his first season as Austin Peay's head coach.  

CAPTAINS/COIN TOSS

  • Matthew Gayle was the Governors captain for the first time this season.
  • Austin Peay won the toss and deferred to the second half; Murray State elected to receive the ball to start the game.

SERIES UPDATE                                            

  • Austin Peay improves to 18-26 all-time against the Racers
  • Austin Peay is now 12-15 all-time against Murray State in Clarksville.
  • The Govs have won back-to-back games against Murray State in Clarksville for the first time since 1978 and 1980.

OFFENSIVE SPARKS

  • Senior DeAngelo Wilson hauled in 10 catches for 99 yards, this is the first game he has played this spring where he has not recorded 100 receiving yards.
  • Draylen Ellis tossed two touchdowns and now has 14 passing touchdowns this season, which is good for the sixth-best season in program history.
  • Ellis completed 21 of 34 pass attempts for a career-high 61.8 completion percentage.
  • Ellis has completed 20 passes in back-to-back games for the first time in his career.
  • Ellis also ran for his third touchdown of the season.
  • Senior Ahmaad Tanner set career highs in carries (25) and rushing yards (125), while also running for a touchdown.
  • Tanner has now scored a touchdown in three-straight games.
  • Eugene Minter hauled in his fourth career receiving touchdown.
  • CJ Evans Jr. recorded the first receiving touchdown of his Austin Peay career.
  • Evans Jr. posted a career-high 124 all-purpose yards with 74 rushing yards and 50 receiving yards.
  • The Governors ran exactly 80 offensive plays, it is their second-straight game with 80 or more plays on the offensive side of the ball.

DEFENSIVE STANDS                                         

  • Jack McDonald led the Governors with 12 tackles – his second-best single-game total this season – he is the first Gov to record double-digit tackles in a game since he (13 tackles) and Kordell Jackson (10 tackles) at Southeast Missouri.
  • Terrell Allen led the Govs with a career-high 1.5 tackles for loss.
  • Koby Perry made a career-high eight tackles in the contest.

SPECIAL TEAMS SPRINTS

  • Grant Paulette made two field goals, he is the first Austin Peay kicker to make a pair of field goals in a game since he hit two field goals at Cincinnati (9/19/20).
  • Paulette's two made field goals were his first attempts this spring and were the first made field goals by any Austin Peay kicker this spring.  
  • Paulette's made fields goals of 33 and 40 yards were the longest by a Governors kicker this season.
  • Matt Rigney averaged 41.4 yards on five punts with three punts being downed inside the 20-yard line.
