Black Team evens World Series 1-1 behind big inning at the plate and Miener's pitching effort

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University's Black Team evened the 2023 Red & Black World Series 1-1, Monday afternoon at Cathi Maynard Park-Cheryl Holt Field, as they defeated the Red Team, 8-2.

The Black Team would put together its best scoring effort of the series so far versus the Red Team in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five runs on four hits to get off to an early lead.

Jaya Herring would get things going for the Black Team with a one-out single followed by Mea Clark drawing a walk and Kiley Hinton being hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Raylon Roach would drive in the first run of the inning with a single, followed by a run-scoring fielder's choice by Kendyl Weinzapfel, with a throwing error allowing a second run to score on the play, making it 3-0.

Gabi Apiag would close the inning with a two-run single to put the Black Team up, 5-0.

That would be all the runs that Black Team starter Samantha Miener would need, as she limited the Red Team to two runs – one earned – on six hits over six innings of work, while walking one and striking out six.

Ashley Martin would work a scoreless seventh for the Black team, including inducing a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

The Black Team would extend its lead in the third inning, scoring three more runs, with Macee Roberts driving in one run and Herring the other two, both on singles.

The Red Team would breakup the shutout in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs, including one being driven in with an RBI single by Brie Howard.
