CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – With basketball season just around the corner, and events such as the SERVPRO Atlantic Sun Conference Basketball Tipoff and Govs Madness set to take place in Clarksville within the month, the Austin Peay athletics department, Five Start Radio Group, and the Hand Family Companies present the weekly Austin Peay Coaches Show featuring head basketball coaches Corey Gipson and Brittany Young at 6 p.m., Wednesday at Buffalo Wild Wings on Wilma Rudolph Boulevard.
With football on its bye week, Gipson and Young join host Brian Rives to break down their 2023-24 teams and look ahead to the ASUN Tipoff Event, Govs Madness, and the regular-season openers at F&M Bank Arena.
Gipson was named the 14th men's basketball head coach in March and made quick work turning around the program with the addition of 12 newcomers and eight coaching and support staff members.
Gipson's 12 newcomers hail from eight different schools. The dozen is highlighted by graduate transfers DeMarcus Sharp, who was the Southland Conference Player and Newcomer of the Year at Northwestern State and Ja'Monta Black, the nation's top-returning three-point scorer.
Young returns to Clarksville for her third year at the helm of the women's basketball program after winning a program-record 37 in her first two seasons.
Young returns five players from last year's team that advanced to the semifinals of the 2022-23 Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Basketball Championship, including the reigning ASUN Sixth Player of the Year, Second Team All-ASUN recipient, and All-ASUN Championship Team selection, Shamarre Hale. This year's team also features eight newcomers coming from eight different schools.
Austin Peay will serve as the host for the inaugural ASUN Basketball Tipoff presented by SERVPRO, Oct. 16, at F&M Bank Arena, the new home of Governors basketball.
The ASUN Basketball Tipoff will feature interviews with head coaches and student-athletes from all 12 member institutions and will be broadcast in two separate ESPN+ broadcasts. During the event, the conference also will release the ASUN Men's and Women's Basketball preseason awards.
Following the tipoff event, Austin Peay will host the third annual Govs Madness, Oct. 26 at F&M Bank Arena. Doors open at 5 p.m., with the event beginning with a men's basketball alumni game featuring numerous Governors' greats and local community members at 5:30 p.m.
The men offer a preview of their 2023-24 campaign with a charity exhibition against Tennessee Tech, Nov. 1, at F&M Bank Arena. The event is not ticketed, but fans are encouraged to donate to Operation Stand Down Tennessee upon entry.
Following the exhibition, the men and women will tipoff their season with a Nov. 6 doubleheader at F&M Bank Arena. The women begin the doubleheader against Trevecca, while the men follow with a contest against Life.
From exclusive giveaways and an autograph session to exciting on-the-court action including a dunk contest and scrimmage, fans will not want to miss the opportunity to get the first look at the 2023-24 men's and women's basketball programs.
Presented weekly, the Austin Peay Coaches Show features Austin Peay head coaches and various assistant coaches and players throughout the academic year. Fans can join head football coach Scotty Walden and host Brian Rives each Wednesday at Buffalo Wild Wings, which returns for its fifth season as the host location of the Austin Peay Coaches Show. The Austin show will be broadcast live from Buffalo Wild Wings and will air live on ESPN Clarksville (104.1 FM and 540 AM) and is simulcast online.
