CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University men's tennis team continues its 2023 fall season with the Brian Coons Memorial Tournament, Friday and Saturday, at the Governors Tennis Courts.
The Governors welcome Cumberland, Southern Indiana, Brescia, and Tennessee Tech to Clarksville for the two-day event.
Austin Peay cruised to 14 wins during its fall opener at the Cumberland Tournament, Sept. 7. Eleven of APSU's 12 singles wins against Milligan and UT Southern came in straight sets, with the team only allowing five-or-more games once against UTS.
Austin won 17 matches at their home tournament last year, with Giovanni Becchis finishing perfect in singles play at the event.
The Govs will play three dual-styled matches during their home tournament, beginning with a 9:30 a.m., Friday match against former Ohio Valley Conference rival, Tennessee Tech. Following their matches, the Govs then host Cumberland at 12:30. Austin Peay wraps up the event with a 12:30 p.m., match against Southern Indiana.
The Brian Coons Memorial Tournament is named after former Governors' men's tennis player, Brian Coons, who passed away during the summer. Coons was a long-time supporter of Austin Peay Athletics and the tennis teams.
Following this weekend's matches, Austin Peay participates in its penultimate event of the fall at the International Tennis Association's Ohio Valley Regionals, Oct. 12-16, in Chattanooga.
