Governors rally past Bruins to complete sweep on final day of Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University's softball team picked up two come-from-behind victories versus UIC and Belmont, Sunday at Cathi Maynard Park-Cheryl Holt Field, as they swept the final two games of the Governors Classic, defeating the Flames 6-3, in a game with was suspended, due to rain, on Saturday, followed by a 5-4 win over the Bruins in the nightcap.

Overall, the Governors (10-9) went 3-1 in the Classic over the weekend and are 4-1 in their current homestand, with one final game to go versus Green Bay on Monday.

Austin Peay 6, UIC 3

In a game that was started Saturday evening, but was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning, due to rain, and with the Govs trailing 2-1, Austin Peay would begin its comeback right away, with the Govs scoring the tying run in their opening at bat of the day.

Kendyl Weinzapfel would start the inning off by drawing a walk, and after a ground out and a single by Skylar Sheridan, score the tying run on a ground out by Emily Harkleroad, to make it 2-2.

The Govs would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four times, including three coming on Sheridan's first collegiate home run.

Kylie Campbell started the inning by drawing a one-out walk and scoring all the way around from first base off a double by Mea Clark, to give the Govs their first lead of the day, 3-2.

But Austin Peay wasn't done, with Weinzapfel reaching on a fielder's choice, followed by a strikeout for the second out of the inning.

That brough up Sheridan, who hammered  a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence for a three-run homer and extending the Govs lead out to 6-2.

Those runs would make a winner  out of Govs starter Samantha Miener (2-2), as she worked the first five innings, giving up two runs off five hits, while striking out two, before giving way to reliever Jordan Benefiel, who worked the final two innings, giving up one run on two hits, while striking out one.

UIC (0-20) had scored their first two runs in the top of the first inning, with the Govs cutting the deficit in half, 2-1, with a run in the third inning, coming on an RBI single by Campbell, that drove in Morgan Zuege.

Austin Peay 5, Belmont 4

In a back-and-forth ballgame with the Bruins (13-8), the Govs found themselves down, 4-3, heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, with the bottom of the order coming up.

But for the second time in the game, it was that was the part of the Austin Peay order that got things going for the Govs, with seventh-place hitter Gabi Apiag starting the rally with a single, followed by a sacrifice from Harkleroad and a single by number-nine hitter Zuege to move Apiag into scoring position.

After Belmont was able to get the second out of the inning, the Bruins walked Lexi Osowski-Anderson, to load the bases and pitch to Campbell.

Campbell didn't disappoint, as she laced a 1-2 pitch into shallow left field to right in Apiag with the tying run and still leaving the bases load, with clean-up hitter Clark coming to the plate.

Clark, who was credited with the game-winning RBI in the UIC win earlier in the day, fell behind early in the count, 1-2, but battled to draw a seven-pitch walk and force in Zuege the go-a head run, making it 5-4.

Benefiel (7-5), who came in as a relief pitcher in the top of the fifth inning, made the lead hold up, as she retired the Bruins in order in the top of the seventh to seal away the 5-4 victory.

Belmont led twice in the contest, scoring the first two runs of the game in the top of the fourth inning, but Austin Peay responded with three runs of their own, in the bottom of the inning, to take their first lead of the game, 3-2.

Weinzapfel open the rally with a single, then moved into scoring position with her team leading sixth stolen base of the season, that along with a throwing error by Belmont's catcher, allowed her to move to third base.

Two outs and a walk to Harkleroad latter, Weinzapfel would score the Govs first run of the game on a single by Zuege, making it 2-1, with Megan Hodum following with a two-run single of her own.

Belmont wouldn't go away quietly though, as the Bruins retook the lead, 4-3, with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth, coming off three hits, before the Govs final rally of the game.
