Govs host Kennesaw State for inaugural ASUN Conference series

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University's softball team will host its first ASUN Conference series, this weekend at Cathi Maynard Park-Cheryl Holt Field, as they welcome Kennesaw State for a three-game series. 

The Governors (11-9) and the Owls (8-16) are scheduled to play three single games in the series, beginning at 6 p.m., Friday evening, followed by a, 3 p.m., Saturday contest and concluding with a  12:30 p.m., Sunday contest. 

Austin Peay comes into the weekend having split a couple of midweek games, first a home 2-0 win versus Green Bay, on Monday, and a 6-1 neutral site loss to #4 Tennessee on Wednesday, while the Owls haven't taken the field since last weekend at the Central Florida Round robin Tournament. 

After 20 games this season, the Govs are led offensively by shortstop Gabi Apiag (.364, 6 doubles, 10 RBI), Kylie Campbell (.328, 1 triple, 10 RBI) and Lexi Osowski-Anderson (.317, 1 HR, 8 RBI), while Kendyl Weinzapfel is the only Gov to have scored 10+ runs (12) and drive in at least 10 runs this spring. 

In the circle, Jordan Benefiel (7-6, 2.74 ERA, 86 K's) has been the workhorse of the Govs pitching staff, having already worked 79.1 innings this spring, while Samantha Miener (2-2, 1 save, 4.74 ERA, 11 K's) and Ashley Martin (2-1, 3.78 ERA, 13 K's) have also recorded multiple wins for Austin Peay.  

The Owls enter the weekend with two players batting over .300 this season, led by Taylor Cates (.329, 1 HR, 15 RBI) and Ty Hardeman (310, 2 2B, 5 RBI). 

Kennesaw State has four pitchers to have seen action in the circle this spring, with Kenley Hilleary (3-3, 2.39 ERA, 60 K's) and Melanie Bennett (3-4, 4.89 ERA, 52 K's) leading the way. 

Between the lines 

  • This weekend's ASUN series with the Owls is the first meeting between the two programs since February 11, 2017. 
  • Austin Peay trails Kennesaw State in the all-time series, 2-5. 
  • This weekend's series with be the first time Kennesaw State has played in Clarksville.  
  • The Govs and Owls have one common opponent this season, Northern Iowa, who Austin Peay defeated 10-5 on February 22, while Kennesaw State dropped two games to the Panthers, 2-1 and 6-1, at home on March 4. 

Up Next
The Govs will begin an eight-game stretch away from home following this weekend's series, beginning with a March 22 contest at Southern Indiana, in Evansville, Indiana.
