MARTIN, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University's softball team scored four runs in its final at bat versus Tennessee Martin, Sunday at Bettye Giles Field, but saw their rally come up one run short, as the Governors were edged by the Skyhawks, 7-6.
Playing a 10-inning contest, the Govs began the final frame down 7-2, but scored two quick runs in the inning, with Skylar Sheridan opening things by reaching on an error and then scoring on a triple to center field by Pearson Vaughan, which was followed by a run-scoring single by Mykenzi Duke to cut it to 7-4.
Following the first out, Kiley Hinton would drive in the third run of the inning, with a single, while Charley Pursley followed with an RBI double to make it a one-run game.
Morgan Zuege would follow with her third hit of the game but a questionable out call at third on Pursley, who was trying to advance on the hit, slowed the Govs rally, still down one.
The Skyhawks got the next Gov hitter out to end the late-inning rally and the game.
The Govs saw the Skyhawks take a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, with Brie Howard tying the contest for Austin Peay with a two-run home run over the left field wall in the top of the sixth, also driving in Zuege.
Tennessee Martin would retake the lead in the seventh, scoring three times, and extend their lead with two final runs in the ninth.
Samantha Miener would start the game for the Govs, throwing three shutout innings, while Payton Harris ended the game with a scoreless 10th inning.
