CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Another week of Atlantic Sun Conference play has come and gone, so we're back with another edition of the Austin Peay Basketball Coaches Show presented by the Five Star Radio Group and Hand Family Companies at 5 p.m. tonight in studio.
Head coaches Corey Gipson and Brittany Young join host Brian Rives to recap a trio of games from last week and look ahead to both team's contests against Sunshine State foes – with one team hosting a pair of games at F&M Bank Arena and another traveling to the 27th state for a three-game road swing.
Gipson and the men's basketball team went undefeated last week with wins against North Alabama and Central Arkansas.
It took five extra minutes to decide a victor, but the Govs came away winners in an 83-80 overtime victory against North Alabama, Thursday. Isaac Haney (24 points) and DeMarcus Sharp (20 points) paced the Govs in the scoring column as APSU earned its first overtime win since Feb. 24, 2022 against SIUE in Ohio Valley Conference play.Â
The Govs then followed their performance with a 94-71, blowout win against Central Arkansas, with Sai Witt leading the way with 27 points in the Govs' largest margin of victory in an ASUN Conference contest in program history.Â
Sharp also tallied 20 points in the win over UCA – his fourth-straight 20-point performance which is tied for the second-longest streak in the Governors digital record-keeping era – helping him win his fourth ASUN Newcomer of the Week honor.Â
With a two-game homestand now behind it, Austin Peay prepares for three-straight games on the road, beginning with a 6 p.m., Thursday contest against Stetson at the J. Ollie Edmunds Center in DeLand, Florida. The Govs then travel to Fort Myers for a 6 p.m. (CT), Saturday contest against Florida Gulf Coast at Alico Arena.
Young and the women's basketball dropped a 61-51 decision to in-state foe Lipscomb, Saturday. Shamarre Hale notched her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman La'Nya Foster's 11-point, 10-rebound performance marked the first double-double of the Riverdale, Georgia native's career.
The Govs host Stetson for 90s and Greek Night in a 6 p.m., Thursday contest before turning their attention to a 6 p.m., Saturday Red Out against the reigning ASUN Regular-Season and Tournament Champions, Florida Gulf Coast.
Presented weekly, the Austin Peay Coaches Show features Austin Peay head coaches and various assistant coaches and players throughout the academic year. The Austin Peay Coaches Show will be broadcast live in-studio and airs live on ESPN Clarksville (104.1 FM and 540 AM) and is simulcast online.
