CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – With Atlantic Sun Conference play underway and both the Austin Peay men's and women's basketball teams in the second half of their 2023-24 season, the Austin Peay athletics department, Five Star Radio Group, and the Hand Family companies are back with the weekly Austin Peay Coaches Show featuring head basketball coaches Corey Gipson and Brittany Young beginning tonight at 5 p.m., Tuesday.
Gipson and Young join host Brian Rives in-studio to discuss both team's seasons thus far and look ahead to the second week of league action which finds both teams on the road.
Gipson and the men's basketball team split their opening games of the new year, defeating Bellarmine 84-68 Thursday in Louisville, Kentucky, before dropping a 69-59 decision to Eastern Kentucky, Saturday.
Dezi Jones leads the Govs with 19.0 points, six three-pointers and eight free throws through the opening week of league play after tallying his third 20-point performance of the season in the win against Bellarmine and 17 points against the Colonels.Â
The 8-9 Govs end a four-game road trip this weekend when they face in-state foe Lipscomb in a 4 p.m., Saturday contest at Allen Arena in Nashville.
Young and the Govs enter their second week of league action on a three-game winning streak after picking up a pair of wins against the Knights and Colonels at F&M Bank Arena.Â
The Govs held on to defeat Bellarmine in the ASUN opener, 65-63, and were led by an 18-point performance by Abby Cater and a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double by Shamarre Hale.
Hale then tallied her season's second double-double in as many games in the Govs' 62-52 victory against the Colonels, Saturday, with 15 points and 13 rebounds, helping the graduate student center become the first player in program history to be tabbed the ASUN Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
With an eight-game homestand now behind it, the women's basketball team hits the road for their second week of league play, beginning with a 5:30 p.m., Thursday game at North Alabama, followed by a 1 p.m., Saturday contest against Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas.
