CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – With five games remaining in Atlantic Sun Conference play, the Austin Peay athletics department, Five Star Radio Group, and the Hand Family Companies are back with the weekly Austin Peay Coaches show featuring head men's basketball coach Corey Gipson and head women's basketball coach Brittany Young at 5 p.m., Tuesday, in-studio.
Gipson and Young join host Brian Rives to recap a trio of wins at F&M Bank Arena and set the stage for next month's ASUN Men's and Women's Basketball Championships.
Gipson and the men's basketball team (13-13, 6-5 ASUN) continued their winning ways at home, picking up their seventh and eighth-straight victories at F&M Bank Arena this season to improve to 10-1 on their home hardwood. The Governors 90.9 home winning percentage is tied with Lipscomb and Kennesaw State for the best in the ASUN, while the Govs' 5-0 mark at home in ASUN play also is in a three-way tie for best in the conference.Â
The Governors opened the week with an 85-69 victory against the reigning ASUN Champions from Kennesaw State, Thursday.
Ja'Monta Black led the Governor with 27 points and seven three-pointers in the victory. The graduate student guard improved his season total of shots from long-range to 87, moving him to fourth all-time and three behind Joe Sibbitt's 90 which was set during the 1995-96 season.Â
The reigning ASUN Newcomer of the Week, Dezi Jones, began his best week of the season with 18 points and six assists in the wire-to-wire win against the Owls.Â
Following the Govs' victory against the Owls, they came back from down 14 in the final 10 minutes to defeat Queens, 79-76, Saturday afternoon.
Jones scored a team and season-high 27 points in the win, while Isaac Haney took charge in the comeback, scoring 15 of his 21 points in the final 10 minutes to lead APSU to its largest come-from-behind win of the season.Â
Austin Peay currently sits fourth in the ASUN standings and hits the road for the final time in the regular season, beginning with a 7:30 p.m., Thursday game at Central Arkansas and followed by a 7:15 p.m., Saturday game at North Alabama in Florence, Alabama.Â
Young and the women's basketball team (12-13, 5-6 ASUN) dropped a heartbreaking, 52-50 game at North Florida, Wednesday, before answering with a 75-69 win against Jacksonville, Saturday, on Gary Mathews Court.Â
The Governors used a fast start and balanced scoring attack to down the Dolphins and capture their fifth ASUN Conference win of the season, as APSU opened with a 21-7 first-quarter lead and had five players score in double figures.
Cur'Tiera Haywood led APSU in scoring with 15 points, marking her third time pacing the team in the scoring column this season.Â
With Thursday off, Young, Haywood, and the rest of the Govs return to action in a 2 p.m., Saturday contest against Lipscomb.
