No. 9 Govs Set for Road Test at North Alabama

October 22, 2026

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The ninth-ranked Austin Peay State University football team heads to Florence, Alabama, for its penultimate regular-season road game against North Alabama. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., Saturday, from Bank Independent Stadium.

Saturday's game will be carried on ESPN+, with Benjamin Ray and Bryan Neece on the call. Fans also can tune into the Governors Sports Network on ESPN Clarksville (104.1 FM/540 AM) or via the TuneIn app to hear Brian Rives and Van Stokes call all the action. ESPN Clarksville's coverage begins with a live pregame show at 5 p.m. (CT).

Last week, the Govs rallied from an early 10-point deficit to secure a much-needed 24-10 road victory against West Georgia. The defense kept the Govs in it, while the offense needed time to find its rhythm; the Govs recorded six sacks, all by a different player, their most in a game since 2021 and held West Georgia to negative-25 yards on the ground during the second half.

On offense, the Governors used a balanced ground game to punish West Georgia, finishing with 186 yards rushing on 45 carries as a team, with five different Govs garnering multiple carries against the Wolves. Courtland Simmons (16 carries, 77 yards and a touchdown) and Chris Parson (12 carries, 68 yards, two scores) led the attack for Austin Peay. North Alabama profiles as one of the stingiest run defenses in the country, surrendering 103.7 yards per game on the ground – ninth in FCS.

NOTABLY

Decade of the Govs

Now officially in the latter half of the 2020s, Austin Peay is one win away from exceeding its 43 wins in the 1980s as the winningest decade in program history. The Governors are 43-32 in the 2020s and their .573 winning percentage is the best in a decade in program history, edging out the .551 (32-26-1) winning percentage in the 1940s. The Govs are 25-12 at home during the 2020s, and their .676 winning percentage is the second best in a decade in APSU history, trailing only the .714 (20-8) winning percentage at home in the 1940s.

#WeWILL

Each week, one Austin Peay player is chosen to wear the No. 0 jersey in honor of Will Hardrick, who tragically passed away in May 2025. Each Monday of the season, head coach Jeff Faris selects the player who best exemplifies Hardrick's character and work ethic to wear the No. 0 jersey that week. For the North Alabama game, defensive lineman Chris Brown (normally adorned with the No. 8) will wear No. 0 for the Govs.

The Slim Reaper

Denver Harper is third among FCS freshmen in all-purpose yards with 805. In addition to his 411 receiving yards and 54 rushing yards on the year, Harper has 340 combined return yards which ranks 28th in the FCS and is eighth among freshmen. Harper has two punt return scores on the year – tied for the most in a single season in program history – including an 82-yard return against New Haven. Harper became the first Gov with two special teams touchdowns in a single game after the first missed field goal for a 100-yard touchdown in program history.

Harper became the first Gov with two special teams touchdowns in a single game after returning the first missed field goal for a 100-yard touchdown. Harper's 10 total scores on the year are tied for the most by a freshman in Division I and are the second most of any freshman across any level of NCAA football.

With at least four games left in the season, Harper already ranks fourth all-time in receiving yards and third in receiving touchdowns by an Austin Peay freshman. At his current pace, he would conclude the regular season with 29 catches (fourth all-time by an APSU freshman) for 617 yards (third) and 9 receiving touchdowns (second).

QB1 Milestone Tracker

In just 20 games under center for APSU, Chris Parson is Austin Peay's career leader in completion percentage (1st, 63.7) and rushing touchdowns for a quarterback (1st, 22). He also ranks Top 10 all-time in: rushing yards for a quarterback (2nd, 1,082), passing yards per game (3rd, 238.4), touchdown passes (5th, 35) passing yards (5th, 4,769), and overall rushing touchdowns (7th, 22). The six-time UAC Offensive Player of the Week in his career, Parson had his eighth-career multi-rushing touchdown performance at West Georgia, Oct. 17. Parson's 26 carries against Tarleton State are the most by a quarterback in APSU's digital record-keeping era and the most by any Gov since running back Jevon Jackson had 38 carries against Utah Tech (11/11/23). The redshirt junior signal caller is second in the UAC and fifth in the FCS in passing efficiency (172.5), while his 63.7 completion percentage is third in the UAC and 25th in the FCS. Parson's 16.2 yards per completion is second in the FCS.

PREVIEWING THE LIONS

Last Meeting

Quarterback Chris Parson threw for 311 yards, ran for another 53 and accounted for six touchdowns (three rushing, three passing) in Austin Peay's 56-28 win against North Alabama, Oct. 25, 2025 at Fortera Stadium. Shemar Kirk caught all three touchdown passes from six, 79 and 47 yards out, while Courtland Simmons and Javious Bond combined for 177 yards on just 14 carries on the ground.

Parson earned UAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the third time in 2025, while linebacker Montreze Smith Jr. (team-high 12 tackles, 1.0 TFL, two interceptions) earned Freshman of the Week honors for the first time in his career.

Preseason Outlook

After a 2025 campaign that saw them finish in the cellar of the United Athletic Conference, North Alabama was picked to seventh going into the 2026 season, ahead of newcomer West Florida. Defensive lineman Fred Vili and linebacker Tango McCauley Jr. were tabbed as preseason All-UAC picks. The Lions have already doubled last season's win total and are among the most improved teams in FCS this season.

Offensive Options

Quarterback Destin Wade makes the offense hum for North Alabama. The signal-caller has scored nine times on the ground and added another six through the air for the Lions, favoring freshman Xavier Johnson (35 catches for 679 yards) as his preferred target. However, the Lions have struggled on third down (29.7 percent, 114th nationally) this season; the Govs will look to limit explosives on early downs.

Defensive Definition

Despite getting just four games out of Vili to this point in the season, the North Alabama defense has emerged as one of the best in the conference. The Lions get into the backfield; North Alabama leads the UAC in sacks (23) and tackles for loss (58), with junior Avery Howard leading the way in both categories as an individual (7.0 and 11.0, respectively).

UP NEXT FOR THE GOVS

At long last, Austin Peay has reached the bye week for the 2026 season, getting a well-earned respite next Saturday. The Govs return to action Nov. 7 for the first of two in a row at Fortera Stadium, hosting longtime rival Eastern Kentucky in a 3 p.m. contest for Stacheville's Salute to Service game.
