Govs Shutout and Walk off Bisons in Saturday Doubleheader

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University's softball team earned a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference victories against Lipscomb, winning 6-0 in the opening game of the doubleheader and then 3-2 in walk off fashion against the Bisons in Game 2, Saturday, at Cathi Maynard Park.

Game One

Austin Peay 6, Lipscomb 0

Alanah Jones tallied her fifth shutout of the season and did not surrender an extra-base hit, as the Governors opened the weekend with a 6-0 win over Lipscomb in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

After a scoreless first inning and a half, Katie Raper and Kiley Hinton singles, before Hinton and Nadia Glass – pinch running for Raper – advanced into scoring position after stealing their respective bases. Ashlyn Dulaney then loaded the bases with a full-count walk before Natalie Bruns flew out to right field to score Hinton. Shelby Allen then launched a sacrifice fly to center field to extend the APSU advantage.

The Govs' defense stranded a pair of Bisons in the top of the third, while Ashlyn Dulaney picked up an RBI walk in the home-half of the frame.

The Govs tallied three hits an inning later, with Sammie Shelander tallying a RBI base knock, extending the lead to 4-0. Shelander again extended the APSU lead in the bottom of the sixth with a 2-RBI single to center field, driving in Brie Howard and Makayla Navarro.

Shelander led the Govs' offense, going 3-of-for-4 with three RBI. Howard paced the team with two runs, while six other Govs tallied a hit in the win.

In the circle, Jones went the distance and allowed just six hits, while striking out two batters and forcing eight ground balls.

Game Two

Austin Peay 3, Lipscomb 2

After holding onto the momentum for nearly the duration of the first game, Lipscomb struck first in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, with a two-run homer in the top of the first giving it the early lead.

Heading to the bottom of the frame, Emilee Baker led off with a single to the shortstop, while Brie Howard reached on a fielder's choice, which also put Baker on second following a throwing error on the Bison's pitcher. A Shelander double to right field scored Baker, while a Katie Raper sacrifice fly brought in the game-tying run.

Cameron Grayson and the Governors' defense allowed no more than one hit an inning across the next six frames; however, six Govs were stranded on base entering the seventh, keeping the score at 2-2.

APSU began the bottom of the seventh with the top of the batting order due up – Baker, Howard, and Shelander – following a ground out to begin the inning, Howard reached on a single, while Shelander then singled, before advancing on the throw, putting a pair of Govs on base with no outs.

Katie Raper then drew the rare intentional walk to load the bases. The next Gov up to the plate, Hinton, fired a line drive to the Bisons' first baseman who tossed it back home, but the ball bounced in front of the Lipscomb pitcher, allowing Howard to come in and score the game-winning run.

Baker and Shelander led the Govs with two hits apiece, while Shelan der, Raper, and Hinton all tallied an RBI in the win.

Cameron Grayson tossed a complete game, allowing four hits – and just two across the final six innings – two runs, and struck out three batters.
