NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second time this season and the third time in her career, Austin Peay State University track & field junior Shaye Foster broke the program record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as the Governors opened their final meet of the regular season at Vanderbilt's Outdoor Music City Challenge, Friday, at the Vanderbilt Outdoor Track Complex.
In the day's first events, Amani Sharif competed in the javelin for the first time in her collegiate career and bested competitors from Vanderbilt, Indiana State, Lipscomb, and more.
In the throwing events, Marcia Dejesus notched a career-best in the discus, while freshman China Giaimo recorded the second-best mark of the season.
Heading onto the track and for already the third time in her career, Shaye Foster broke the program record in the 3K steeplechase with a time of 11:06.57, which broke the record – which she set two weeks ago at the Georgia Tech Invitational – by over four seconds. Sydney Freeman finished five spots behind Foster in the event, recording a time of 11:21.24 in her first appearance in the event.
The Governors had four sprinters finish in the top 20 of the 200-meter, with Isis Banks besting her previous personal best by one hundredth of a second to finish sixth with a time of 24.32. Seven Pettus (24.651) and Sharif (24.653) also set personal bests in the event, finishing 11th and 12th, respectively.
Mary Kate French set a new personal best in the 1,500, beating her own previous best by over 17 seconds, while Hallie Mattingly also set a personal best by 16 tenths of a second.
The Governors return to action at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, when Dejesus and Emma Tucker compete in the hammer throw.
