Not only is Glenn Colivas Austin Peay’s greatest pole vaulter in history, but he also ranked as one of the world’s best during that same time span (1976-80). The Montreal, Canada native earned All-OVC for four years, winning seven indoor and outdoor championships in his illustrious career. In fact, he set the OVC outdoor pole-vault record as a freshman and reset it a final time (16-6; OVC marks could only be set during championship meets) in the 1978 league championships, a mark that stood until 1985. Colivas’ 1980 OVC Indoor championship pole-vaulting performance helped him earn the right to participate in the NCAA championships, where he finished second nationally with a jump of 17 feet. As a result, he earned All-America honors, only one of three APSU track athletes in school history to earn such distinction. Later that same year, he set the APSU outdoor pole vault mark (17-3) at the Dogwood Relays in Knoxville. Colivas appeared in four NCAA Outdoor Track Championships. As a freshman, Colivas was one of only three APSU athletes invited to the prestigious Kansas Relays. He was the 1977 Florida Relays and Dogwood Relays pole-vault champion as well as Tom Black Classic Champ in 1980. Colivas helped lead Austin Peay to the 1978 OVC track title. In addition to his 1980 NCAA second-place finish, he made championship appearances in 1977-78. Colivas participated in 1978 Commonwealth Games and was chosen for the 1980 Canadian team that boycotted the Olympic Games. He also represented Canada in the 1981 Pacific Conference games in New Zealand and Friendship Games in Japan. He formerly held the Canadian pole-vault record at 17-6. In 1981, Colivas was co-recipient of the Joy Award, which is presented annually to APSU’s most valuable senior athlete. In 1988, he was named to the OVC 40th Anniversary All-Time Men’s Track team. Colivas, who formerly taught at Woodlawn Elementary School, is an elementary teacher in Houston, where he also serves as head track and field plus gymnastics coach.
