2022: Appeared in three games off the bench at quarterback… Attempted five passes against Presbyterian (Sept. 3) with his lone completion going for a 13-yard touchdown… Also downed a 29-yard punt inside the 20-yard line against the Blue Hose… Rushed once for seven yards against Mississippi Valley State (Sept. 10)… Went 6-for-8 through the air for 47 yards against Murray State (Oct. 15), also rushed once for one yard… Downed his second punt of the season inside the 20-yard line with a 28-yard boot against the Racers… Finished the season with seven completions for 60 yards and a touchdown.
2021: Saw first action as a Governor against Ole Miss (Sept. 11) where he completed a pair of passes for 34 yards… Had an impressive outing in first-career start at Murray State (Oct. 23) with 134 yards and two touchdowns through the air and 72 rushing yards on 12 carries… Also punted twice for 65 yards with one punt pinning the Racers inside their own five-yard line… Made his second start at No. 12 UT Martin, throwing for 104 yards on 11 completions… Finished the season with 353 yards on 34 completions and three touchdown passes, also added 58 yards on the ground on just 21 carries.
2020-21:Â Transferred from Memphis following the fall season... Did not see action during the spring.
Prior to Austin Peay:Â A member of 2019 Memphis team that finished with a 12-2 record and won the American Athletic Conference Championship... Did not see action for the Tigers in 2019 or the fall season of 2020.
High School: Played for head coach Earnest Hill his final two seasons at McGill-Toolen Catholic High School… In his four years, the Yellow Jackets compiled a 49-6 record and qualified for four consecutive Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 7A state playoffs, including three championship game appearances (2015-17)… Member of the McGill-Toolen 2015 state title squad… First season as the starting signal caller was in 2017, leading the Yellow Jackets to the state title game and the Region 1-7A crown, finishing the season with a 13-1 overall record and 8-0 in regional action… Directed an offense that averaged more than 30 points per game while throwing for 1,942 yards on 149-of-236 passing and 21 touchdowns and running for 426 yards and three TDs… Named Second Team AL.com All-Coastal Alabama… Missed six games during senior season due to a kneecap injury, returning to lead McGill-Toolen to a 10-3 record and an AHSAA Class 7A state playoff quarterfinal appearance.
Personal: Sheldon Kent Layman is the son of Steve and Sara Layman… Birthday is April 13… Has a sister, Savannah… A general studies major with a minor in management and coaching.
