Clarksville, Tenn. – Junior Lidia Yanes Garcia, of the Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

At 15-0 on the season, Yanes Garcia is on pace for a third straight Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year honor after dispatching two-time defending champion SIUE’s No. 1 Lara Tupper (6-2, 6-1) and reigning OVC Player of the Week Stella Cliffe of Eastern Illinois (6-0, 6-4) to earn her second OVC Player of the Week honor on the season.

Yanes Garcia also went unbeaten at No. 2 doubles last week as the Govs improved to 6-2 in the league this season.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Wednesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Junior pitcher Jacques Pucheu, of the baseball team, went seven innings for his season’s fourth win in Saturday’s contest at Belmont, scattering five hits and striking out six to improve his ERA to 3.91 for the season.
  • Junior pole vaulter Savannah Amato, of the track and field team, earned her season’s fifth OVC Field Athlete of the Week honor after securing the school outdoor record with a 4.17m pole vault at the Hilltopper Relays, crushing the old mark and moving into sixth in the NCAA East Region and 11th nationally.
  • Freshman Chase Korte, of the men’s golf team, earned his first career OVC Men’s Golfer of the Week nod after shooting a final-round 67 to take runner-up honors at the Wofford Intercollegiate, shooting a career 54-hole best nine-under par 207 (70-70-67) for his best career finish.
  • Junior utility man Brett Newberg, of the baseball team, cranked three home runs in the series finale against Belmont to give the Govs a sweep of the Bruins. He’s the first Gov since Logan Gray (2015) with a three-homer game, which earned him D1Baseball.com Player of the Day honors and a nomination for Golden Spikes Performance of the Week.
  • Sophomore Meghann Stamps, of the women’s golf team, placed fifth at the weather-altered Murray State Invitational thanks to a 148 (71-77), which included a career-best 71 and a team-high five birdies.
  • Junior infielder Danielle Liermann, of the softball team, hit .368 (9-of-17) with two home runs and eight RBI to help the Govs to a 3-1 record in OVC play last week.
