CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.– Redshirt junior defensive lineman Josephus Smith, of the Austin Peay State University football team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week, Wednesday.

A native of Leeds, Alabama, Smith headlined a Governor defense unit that held UT Martin to minus 25 rushing yards and matched the programs single-game sack record. Smith only recorded three tackles on the day, but all three tackles were for a loss. With two sacks, and another stop for a loss on a Skyhawk run, Smith’s three tackles resulted in minus 17 yards of offense for UT Martin.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Athletic Communications staff each Wednesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Freshman Tegan Seyring, of the volleyball team, broke her career-high in back-to-back matches last week. She posted 17 kills and a .300 attack percentage in Govs five-set loss to SEMO. She then followed with 18 kills, a .382 attack percentage, and four blocks in Governors five-set win at UTM to secure a spot in the OVC tourney.
  • Freshman, Shay-Lee Kirby, of the women’s basketball team, was the Governors co-leading scorer in her collegiate debut against Kentucky Wesleyan, scoring 21 points and shooting 77.8% from the floor. Kirby knocked down a team-high six three pointers in her debut to help the Govs break the program single-game three-point record. The freshman from West Virginia continued her hot shooting in the Govs next game, knocking down three more three-pointers en route to being the team’s second leading scorer with 12 points.
  • Junior-college transfer Tahanee Bennell, of the women’s basketball team, scored 21 points and dished out four assists in her Austin Peay debut. Bennell knocked down five three-pointers in the season opener to help set a new single-game program three-point record. In thes second game of the week, Bennell scored six points, off two more triples, and added two assists and four rebounds in the Govs win over Christian Brothers.
