Clarksville, Tenn. – Freshman pitcher Alex Robles, of the Austin Peay State University baseball team, has been named this week’s Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.
Robles twirled a one-hit shutout in Austin Peay’s series-opener against Belmont last Friday, adding a career-best nine strikeouts for good measure. It was the first complete-game one-hitter tossed by a Govs hurler since 1997 and the first nine-inning one-hitter since before electronic record-keeping took effect.
The Tucson, Ariz., native retired the first seven batters he faced before giving up a bloop single to break up the no-hit bid. He retired the final 11 batters he faced, including three via strikeout.
Robles earned adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, Monday, his first career weekly award from the conference office.
The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.
Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:
- Senior Xiamar Hudson, of the track and field team, broke the school record in the 5000m run at the Gateway Classic, winning the event with a 17:20.13 mark easily surpassing Bertha Castillo’s 2007 run of 17:42.84. Hudson now owns Austin Peay records in both indoor and outdoor track and cross country.
- Senior first baseman Kristin Whitmire, of the softball team, hit .500 (5-for-10) with two home runs and eight RBI last weekend and slugged two home runs in Game 2 at Eastern Kentucky to tie an Austin Peay single-game record.
- Sophomore sprinter Breigh Jones, of the track and field team, contributed 36 points to Austin Peay’s tally at the Gateway Classic, winning the 400m dash as an individual and helping the Lady Govs sweep the 4x100m and 4x400m relay events. She bested SIU Edwardsville’s Jessica Oranika in the 400m dash with a 54.22 mark to take the conference lead in that event.
