Clarksville, Tenn. – Senior pitcher/utility player Lauren de Castro, of the Austin Peay State University softball team, has been named this week’s Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.
de Castro led the Lady Govs to a 5-1 mark last week, including an Ohio Valley Conference sweep against Belmont and a split with Tennessee State. She batted a robust .588 (10-for-17) with three home runs and 12 RBI to pace Austin Peay’s offensive attack, and went 3-1 with three complete games including two shutouts in the circle.
She tossed a two-hit shutout against Northern Kentucky, Wednesday, and came back to go 3-for-4 in the Game Two win. Against Tennessee State, Sunday, she scattered six hits over seven shutout innings, striking out six for the win and then homered twice in Game Two.
Monday, de Castro earned adidas® OVC Player of the Week honors, the second weekly player award of her career and her fourth career weekly award overall from the conference office.
The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.
 
Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:
  • Junior Ornella Di Salvo, of the women’s tennis team, swept both matches after moving to the No. 1 singles slot for Austin Peay last weekend, defeating Belmont’s Sandra Kancheva (6-1, 6-1) and Tennessee State’s Victoria Haynes (6-1, 6-1) in Lady Gov victories.
  • Sophomore Breigh Jones, of the track and field team, won the 400m dash at Ole Miss Open with a 55.08 mark and helped lead Austin Peay’s 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams to victories, including a school-record run in the 4x100m event.
  • Freshman pitcher/infielder Alex Robles, of the baseball team, went seven innings in his first start as the Govs No. 1 hurler, scattering six hits and allowing one earned run for the win against Jacksonville State.
