Senior outfielder Bailey Shorter, of the Austin Peay softball team, has been named this week’s Austin Peay Athlete of the Week.

Shorter hit .538 (7-for-13) to help the Govs sweep Tennessee Tech over the weekend and remain among the upper echelon of the Ohio Valley Conference. The Evansville native homered twice and drove in six over the weekend, scoring four times and hitting four doubles.

On her way to OVC Player of the Week honors, Shorter homered during the 12-0 shellacking of the Golden Eagles in Game Two and went 3-for-5 with a homer and a double in the finale against Tennessee Tech. She hit at least one double in all three games of the series.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Senior Michael Busse, took runner-up honors at the Murray State Invitational on the strength of a 208 (69-68-71) at Greystone Golf Club; he scored a tournament-best 4.42 strokes per hole on par-5 offerings and canned a team-best 15 birdies during the event.
  • Junior kicker Grant Paulette, of the football team, hit the two longest field goals by a Gov this season, including a 33-yarder with two seconds left to lift the Govs past 13th-ranked Murray State on Senior Day. Paulette earned OVC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for his work against the Racers.
  • Sophomore sprinter Kenisha Phillips, shattered the school 200-meter dash record with a 23.57 mark at the Margaret Simmons Invitational, Saturday, a mark that also moved her back into the top-25 in the NCAA East Region.
  • Sophomore outfielder Garrett Spain, hit .461 (6-for-13) with three homers, a double, a triple, five runs scored and six RBI over the weekend against Eastern Kentucky to lead the Govs to a series win. The Clarksville native smacked a pair of solo homers in Game Two of the series.
  • Freshman quarterback Draylen Ellis, of the football team, earned his fourth OVC Newcomer of the Week honor after an efficient 21-for-34, 227-yard, 2-touchdown performance against 13th-ranked Murray State.
  • Senior midfielder Claire Larose, of the soccer team, scored one goal and assisted on another in Austin Peay’s season-finale at Morehead State.
  • Sophomore Jana Leder, of the women’s tennis team, took both singles matches last weekend against Southeast Missouri’s Kseniya Zonova (6-1, 6-4) and UT Martin’s Aziza Aubin (6-0, 6-2) at No. 3.
