Clarksville, Tenn. – Junior sprinter Breigh Jones, of the Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Jones broke her own school record in the 400m dash over the weekend, becoming the first Lady Gov to post a sub-55 second mark with a 54.97 run at the ETSU Niswonger Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn., taking runner-up honors in the 92-runner event.

While second place might be enough to temper the excitement of earning a school record, Jones finished second to 2014 World Indoor Champion Jernail Hayes, and was stride-for-stride against one of the top runners in the nation for the better part of 300 meters.

In addition to her work as an individual, Jones ran the second leg of the 4x400m relay, helping the squad to a fourth-place finish with a season-best 3:49.58 run, ranking second in the Ohio Valley Conference.

A Memphis native, Jones mark leads the OVC in the 400m by nearly a second-and-a-half (teammate Kymmalett Ross is second at 56.44) and ranks 16th nationally.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Junior guard Tiasha Gray, of the women’s basketball team, averaged 18.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 2.7 steals in three games last week including a 31-point night against Morehead State and a 19-point, 12-board outing against Tennessee State. She was 23-for-49 (46.9 percent) from the floor and played 112 of a possible 125 minutes during the games, including all 45 in the overtime game against TSU – a game in which she also scored her 1,000th career point.
  • Junior center Chris Horton, of the men’s basketball team, averaged a double-double (18.5 points, 10.5 rebounds) in two games last week while shooting 60.0 percent (12-for-20) from the floor.
