Clarksville, Tenn. – Junior center Chris Horton, of the Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

In perhaps the best week of a stellar career, Horton averaged 23.0 points – equaling his career-best with 23 points in both games – alongside 14.5 boards and 2.5 blocks for the Govs. The 6-9 big man shot 50 percent from the floor (14-for-28) and 72 percent (18-for-25) from the free-throw line.

Against Morehead State, Horton became the first Gov since Derek Wright in 2008 to get to the free-throw line 20 times in a game – he hit 15 of those on the way to a 23-point, 11-rebound night against the Eagles.

In Saturday’s contest against Southeast Missouri, Horton passed assistant coach Bubba Wells for ninth place in career rebounds with 737 and – despite not garnering a board until the 9:50 mark in the first half – grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds, most since John Fraley had 18 against Tennessee State in 2010.

With double-doubles in both games, Horton now has five consecutive games with a double-double – a feat never accomplished by Wells, Trenton Hassell or Drake Reed, among other Austin Peay luminaries.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Sophomore jumper Kaylnn Pitts, of the track and field team, won the triple jump at the Thundering Herd Invitational with a season-best 12.10m leap, moving her into third place in the conference and 94th nationally in the event.
  • Sophomore forward Beth Rates, of the women’s basketball team, earned her season’s first double-double with a 12-point, 16-rebound effort in a win against Southeast Missouri, with the 16 boards representing a career-high for the Hawesville, Ky., native.
  • Sophomore Aaron Jumonville, of the men’s tennis team, picked up a three-set win at No. 3 singles against Abilene Christian’s Nico Agritelley (7-6, 0-6, 10-4), and teamed with senior Aleksas Tverijonas for a 6-4 No. 2 doubles victory over Guilherme Gesser and Marco Bensley.
  • Junior sprinter Breigh Jones, of the track and field team, did not compete in her usual 400m dash event but put up top marks in the 60m (7.67, fifth) and 200m (24.56, third) at the Thundering Herd Invitational. Both marks were personal-bests, with the 200m run accounting for the best in the Ohio Valley Conference this season.
