Clarksville, Tenn. – Sophomore outfielder Chandler Groves, of the Austin Peay State University softball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.
Groves hit .556 (10-for-18) in five games last week, smacking three home runs and driving in 12 from her spot as the lead-off hitter for an Austin Peay squad that went 3-2 on the week.
The Cross Plains, Tenn., native collected multiple hits in four of five contests last week, scoring a run in four of five games as well. Groves displayed some prodigious power from the leadoff spot, hitting a three-run home run in Game One against Samford and a grand slam in Game Two against the Bulldogs. Groves also led off the series finale at UT Martin with a solo home run.
For her efforts, Groves was named adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Softball Player of the Week, her first career weekly honor and the first earned by an APSU athlete since Lauren de Castro for the week of March 24, 2014. Tuesday, she also was named Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week.
The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.
Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:
- Junior Chris Baker, of the men’s golf team, fired a school-record 61 in the second round at the Grub Mart Invitational in Glencoe, Ala., last week, going 11-under par on the round with 12 birdies and one bogey; he finished tied for sixth overall with a three-round, even-par score of 216.
- Junior Breigh Jones, of the track and field team, won her first outdoor 400m attempt of the spring with a 53.99 mark at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold, and concluded the event by leading Austin Peay to victory in the 4x400m relay (3:51.85).
- Senior Dimitar Ristovski, of the men’s tennis team, helped the Govs remain undefeated in OVC play with an exemplary performance at No. 1 singles last week, holding off Morehead State’s Richie Kruunenberg (3-6, 6-1, 6-2) and Eastern Kentucky’s Alex Alvaro (7-6 [10-8], 6-4) for victories.
- Sophomore Logan Gray, of the baseball team, hit .500 (8-for-16) with three home runs, five RBI and eight runs scored for the Govs last week, homering in three straight games (the midweek at Southern Illinois and the first two contests against Tennessee Tech) and scoring at least two runs in three of the four contests.
