CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University women's volleyball team (5-12, 2-4) will host Ohio Valley Conference
rivals Tennessee Tech (5-12, 1-5) and Tennessee State (3-16 0-5), 7 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
"These matches will both be big ones for us," head volleyball caoch
Cheryl Holt said. "Number one, we're at home, and
number two, both Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State are struggling right now."
While the Lady Govs are preparing for the matches, Holt is concerned with her team's consistency.
"We've been busy in practice working on ball control and getting into a quicker offense," Holt said. "We're not making a lot
of changes, but we want to make what we are doing better."
Against Tennessee Tech, the Lady Govs are on the lookout for hitters Laura Sidorowicz, a senior, and Anne Morrow, a junior.
Sidorwicz and Morrow supplied 27 kills each over the weekend against OVC rivals Eastern Illinois and Southeast Missouri.
"TTU has two real offensive weapons (Sidorwicz and Morrow), and if we can block teams in conference play, we can be good
offensively as well," Holt said. "Like us, Tennessee Tech is struggling some with balance. If their primary hitters aren't on the
front row, they have to find somewhere else to go.
"Tennessee Tech is a good team, and they are going to get some good wins this season. I just hope one of them isn't
tomorrow night against us."
Thursday night, the Lady Govs will host another Middle Tennessee team, Tennessee State. The Lady Tigers have not won
a conference game this season, losing 3-0 in each of its five OVC outings.
"Just because TSU hasn't had a conference win doesn't mean they're quitters," Holt said. "When we get them down, we've
got to keep them down. They're an explosive team that will roll off a string of points, and be right in the game if you let them get
in your head."
The Lady Govs' game plan is to take each game and get better blocks, better passes, and smarter hitters. In order to gain
confidence, APSU has been diligently working on these areas in practice. Each individual, Holt said, needs to get better for the
team to improve.
"I'm still waiting on my freshmen," Holt said. "
Kristen Kirch is better than she's playing right now, and
Jaimie Thill is not even
close to reaching her full potential. As soon as we get everyone going, we'll be a totally different team. I just hope it's not too
late."
