CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Despite being in the heat of battle this season, Austin Peay State University baseball coach Gary
McClure is still on the recruiting trail. McClure opened the spring portion of the signing period with the addition of pitcher Jamie
Ganz, from South Euclid, Ohio.
Ganz, a 6-3 right-hander, is currently 4-2 with a 4.83 ERA/7 at Lakeland Community College. He has allowed just eight
walks against 33 strikeouts in 37.3 innings pitched. Last season, he was 3-1 with a 3.33 ERA/7 and was named to the first-
team All-Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) and was an NJCAA Region XII all-tournament selection. He
will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
"Jamie is a submarine style pitcher who has thrown with this style for a long period of time so he is already very polished,"
said McClure. "He is the first submarine-type pitcher that we have recruited and not converted to this type of pitcher. He throws
his fastball from 86-89 mph range and has very good movement. His velocity is much better than any sidearm or submarine
guy we have had in the past, and we feel like he is a prospect who will come in a make an immediate impact on our pitching
staff right away."
Looking at the Govs 2005 roster, they will lose three pitchers who are seniors on this year's squad: starter
Jeff Mault and
relievers
Scott Steinbrecher and
Adam Muston. Mault is the Govs No. 2 starter in 2004 while Steinbrecher served in long relief
and Muston has become the Govs closer.
"We are very excited about signing Jamie, especially with the loss of
Adam Muston, whose throwing motion is similar to
Ganz's," said McClure. "I like having a pitcher of this type on my staff every year because of their ability to bounce back very
quickly, and from the standpoint that you don't see this type arm action as a hitter on a daily basis so it is a big adjustment. We
also have also had great success with this type pitcher in the past such as Neil Murphy, Klint Rommel, Frank Kunich, and
presently
Adam Muston, all who have played significant roles on out team while working out of the bullpen as our closer."
