CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Junior quarterback Cedric Johnson ran for 94 yards and four touchdowns while throwing for another 139 yards as Jacksonville State rolled over Austin Peay State University, 42-9, Thursday night, in Ohio Valley Conference football played at Governors Stadium.
The contest, televised by ESPNU, saw the Gamecocks roll off 35 unanswered points after Austin Peay built a 9-7 first-quarter lead.
It was Johnson, the transfer from Copiah-Lincoln Junior College, who then literally took over the contest. The Gamecocks proceeded to march 63 yards in nine plays, the last 15 yards being covered by Johnson to give Jacksonville State the lead, 14-9.
However, it was Johnson's next TD that literally broke open the contest. On second down from his own 31-yard line, Johnson optioned right only to look up and see a host of Governors in his way. He elected to reverse his field and when he did the speedy quarterback found wide open territory. He ran away from the Governors' defense for a 69-yard score.
That allowed Jacksonville State to take a 21-9 halftime lead.
The Gamecocks left little doubt by opening the second half by driving 58 yards in 14 plays, the final two coming from Ronald Murray, to go up 28-9.. JSU was a perfect three-for-three in third-down conversions on the drive. In fact, the Gamecocks' 11-of-16 in third-downs compared to 3-of-11 by APSU was a telling statistic.
APSU finished the night with 462 yards in total offense compared to a season-low 209 for the Govs, who passed for just 98 yards. As a result, Jacksonville State owned an overwhelming 37:09 to 22:51 time-of-possession advantage.
Johnson finished the night with eight carries for 94 yards while completing 10 of 13 passes for 139 yards.
Gary Orr, making his first Austin Peay start, was just 5-of-13 passing for 54 yards before leaving the game in third quarter with a bruised sternum.
Defensively, Chris Haynes had 12 total tackles and Kit Hartsfield 11 for APSU while defensive end Chris Newell had 2.5 tackles for loss, including a sack.
Nose guard John Scott had seven tackles for JSU.
