Beck, Lady Govs still winless in OVC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? Junior Ashley Beck scored her season's ninth goal in a losing effort as Austin Peay State University women's soccer team dropped its seventh straight Ohio Valley Conference match at Samford, 2-1, Sunday. The Lady Govs fall to 6-11 with a 0-7 OVC mark, while the Bulldogs improved to12-3 with and an undefeated 7-0 conference clip.

Beck, who is tied for the league-lead in goal's scored, netted the game's first goal in the 34th minute. After firing a shot off Samford keeper Cayley Winters, she capitalized on the deflection to give Austin Peay a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs were not fazed and quickly bounced back. In fewer than five minutes, Kelly Shaffer hooked up with Cassie Applegate for the game-tying goal.
Applegate went top shelf from 12 yards out to even the score in the 38th minute at one goal apiece. Hilary Samuels deposited the game-winner in the 42nd minute to close out the scoring.

Austin Peay's offense consisted mainly of Beck, who had six of the team's eight shots. Sophomore keeper Michelle Smith had three saves.

Samford, who ran its win streak to a school-record tying eight games, finished with 19 shots and racked up seven corner kicks in the contest.

The Lady Govs wrap up their OVC schedule with a pair of home weekend matches beginning with a 7 p.m., Friday match against Morehead State followed by a 1 p.m., Sunday match with Eastern Kentucky.
