Women lose close meet in Battle of the Lakes; Castillo places fifth at Penn Relays

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Sophomore Bertha Castillo placed fifth in the 10,000-meter run at the 112th Annual Penn Relays and Austin Peay State University women's track and field team dropped a close meet against archrival Murray State, losing by a score of 47-43, Friday, at Governors Stadium.

Leading the way for the Lady Govs were freshman pole vaulters Molly Bartkiewicz (first place, 11-06) and Carrie Burggraf (second place, 11-0). In the 800-meter run, sophomores Holley Koob, Melissa Nobbs, and freshman Sarah Chandler finished first, second and third, respectively. In the 3000-meter run, sophomores Nobbs and Anna-Claire Raines and freshman Kate Gauf were the top three runners. Sophomore Jen Pond finished first (38.34 meters) in the javelin and third (12.17 meters) in the shot put.

But the biggest story was in Pennsylvania, where Castillo finished with a time of 35:06.72, just six seconds off the time needed to automatically qualify for the an NCAA Provisional. She beat runners from schools such as Texas, Michigan, Georgia Tech and Penn State.
