NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? One big inning ? a six-run, third-inning affair, was enough to end Austin Peay State University's run in the NCAA Baseball Championship as it lost 10-5 in Game Five of the Championship's Nashville Regional, Sunday afternoon, at Hawkins Field.
Vanderbilt advances to the regional championship round with a 7 p.m., Sunday, contest against Michigan. Each team scored in four consecutive innings, Austin Peay (40-22) built a 3-0 lead in the first two innings. Tyler Farrar's two-run home run in the first inning, his second of the tournament, handed the Govs a 2-0 lead. In the second, J.B. Gilbert brought home the Govs third run with a double.
Vanderbilt (53-12) six-run third inning saw them send 11 men to the plate. The inning's two big blows came on back-to-back hits. Pedro Alvarez plated two runs with a bases-loaded single. Followed by Ryan Flaherty's three-run home run to right field to finish the inning's scoring with the Commodores leading, 6-3.
The Govs put runs on the board in both the third and fourth frames. Trey Lucas had a sacrifice fly in the third and Rafael Hill had a run-scoring double in the fourth to keep the margin manageable.
Dominic de la Osa continued the Commodores scoring drive with a fourth-inning solo home run. Another VU run crossed the plate on a de la Osa bases-loaded fielder's choice. A two-run home run by Matt Meingasner pushed the Vanderbilt lead to 10-5 after six innings.
Austin Peay starter Ryne Mantooth (8-4) was tagged for the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and striking out three over 2.2 innings. Rafael Hill, Gilbert and Levi Cheshire each had two hits for the Govs, who posted 10 hits in the affair.
Vanderbilt reliever Ty Davis came on and shut the Governors down, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out eight over the final 5.1 innings. Flaherty went 5-for-5 with a double, home run and five RBI. Macias and Feinberg each added three hits as the Commodores rapped out 17 hits.
NOTES: Farrar had a hit in each game of the tournament, hitting home runs in the Govs two games against Vanderbilt... Gilbert had five hits, all doubles, in the tournament... Austin Peay's six doubles in the contest tied a season high set at UT Martin, April 28.
