Smith, Lady Govs post third-straight shutout

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team won its third-straight match, a 1-0 decision at Lipscomb, Friday night. The Lady Govs improve to 3-4 overall, while the Lady Bisons fall to 2-6.

Not only did the Lady Govs win their third-straight, sophomore keeper Michelle Smith also recorded her third straight shutout as the Austin Peay defense held Lipscomb to just two shots on goal for the match. While the defense helped to relieve the pressure, Smith came up with a big save on a breakaway just before the half.

“The first half, we lacked composure,” Lady Govs head coach Kelley Guth said. “Michelle's save on the breakaway really set the tone for second half. We settled down and played our game.”

Shortly after the half, junior Ashley Beck found the back of the net for the eventual game-winner. The Lady Govs dominated the second half, outshooting the Lady Bisons, 14-2, in the frame. Austin Peay finished with a 28-9 shots advantage, including a 9-2 shots-on-goal advantage.

“We were unlucky on a number of scoring opportunities,” Guth said. “We created some solid scoring chances and we have to continue to work on capitalizing. I'm proud of them for putting it together and getting the result we wanted. This is the kind of soccer we want to play the rest of the season.”

Smith finished with two saves, while Beck, who posted her season's third goal, had a game-high seven shots to lead the Lady Govs. Freshman Kellie Cannon had six shots with two on goal.

Katie Shelton had nine saves for Lipscomb. Hallie Proffitt had three shots to lead the Lady Bisons.
