JACKSONVILLE, Ala. ? Austin Peay State University's volleyball team was swept by Ohio Valley Conference defending champion Jacksonville State, 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 30-21), Saturday afternoon.
The match itself was dominated by host Jacksonville State which pounded out 57 kills and a .297 attack percentage on the night. Austin Peay's offense could not keep pace recording 38 kills with just a .135 attack percentage. Also hurting the Lady Govs cause was a defense was recorded only 45 digs and six blocks on the afternoon.
Individually, the matchup between two of the league's top hitters ? APSU senior outside hitter Dodi Szymska and JSU senior outside hitter Abbey Breit ? was upstaged by the play of another pair of outside hitters. Sophomore outside hitter Kirstin Distler led the Lady Govs with 13 kills while going errorless on 26 attacks for a .500 attack percentage. Meanwhile, Gamecocks senior opposite hitter Rebekah Nichols led all hitters with 16 kills and a .614 attack percentage. Szymska was limited to nine kills on the night while Breit posted 12 kills.
“Kirstin has really picked up her play all-around,” said Lady Govs head coach Jenny Hazelwood. “She's gained a lot of confidence in the way she is playing. We need some people around her to pick up their play so we can be successful.”
Austin Peay opens the home portion of its schedule when it hosts Tennessee-Martin in a 7 p.m., Friday contest. The Lady Govs will play 10 of their next 13 matches at home ? comprising the whole of the 2007 home slate.
