Offense silenced as Lady Govs volleyball drops two

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? Battling offensive inconsistency through the season's first two weekends, Austin Peay State University's volleyball team saw its offensive silenced en route to dropping a pair of matches, Friday, during the first day of the Memphis Invitational. The Lady Govs dropped their opener against Arkansas-Little Rock, 3-0 (30-23, 30-22, 30-20), before being swept by host Memphis, 3-0 (30-26, 30-21, 30-25), in the nightcap.

In the day's first match, Austin Peay (4-6) was limited to 38 kills while committing 26 errors to finish with a .093 attack percentage. Meanwhile, Arkansas-Little Rock's (4-4) offense found little resistance on the way to recording 51 kills and a .333 attack percentage. The Lady Govs defense posted a season-low 37 digs in the match.

Individually, senior Dodi Szymska led the Lady Govs with 13 kills and a .229 attack percentage and was the only APSU player in double-digit kill territory. UALR's Amila Barakovic led all hitters with 14 kills while Anita Bucur added 12 kills off the bench.

The nightcap's storyline was the same with the Lady Govs recording only 33 kills and committing 27 errors for a season-low .052 attack percentage. APSU matched host Memphis with 15 kills in the match's first game before mustering only nine kills the succeeding two games. Meanwhile, the Tigers offense posted 51 kills and a .322 attack percentage on the night.

Freshman Taylor Skinner led Austin Peay with six kills, four service aces and two blocks. Sophomore Kirstin Distler posted a team-high eight kills while Szymska finished with seven kills. Ashley Liford led Memphis with 16 kills and Shelby Burton added 11 kills.

Austin Peay continues play at the Memphis Invitational, Saturday, with an 11:30 a.m. contest against Mississippi State followed by a 4:30 p.m. affair against Nicholls State which will conclude its stay.
