CHARLESTON, Ill. ? Austin Peay State University's volleyball team posted its second consecutive sweep, winning at Eastern Illinois, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-19), Friday night, in Ohio Valley Conference action.
Austin Peay ended a six-match losing streak against Eastern Illinois and improved to 13-6 overall and 5-2 in league play. Eastern Illinois remains winless in conference action (0-7) and falls to 3-14 overall.
Big Austin Peay scoring runs were the story in each set. The first set was tied, 6-6, before the Lady Govs scoring seven of the next eight points en route to the 25-18 victory. The two teams were tied 10-10 in the second set before Austin Peay put together a 13-6 run and won the set 25-17. Eastern Illinois didn't go quietly in the third set, staying within two points early on, but Austin Peay scored 12 of the final 19 points to end the match.
“I'm really proud of how we prepared for Eastern Illinois,” said Lady Govs head coach Jenny Hazelwood. “We spent a lot of time looking at film and putting together a scouting report as a team.
“EIU is a good team but they are young. We emphasized that in our preparations and tried to take advantage of that inexperience. But mainly, we focused on taking care of our side of the net and we did a good job finishing points all night.”
Sophomore Jessica Mollman and junior transfer Stephanie Champine each had 11 kills to lead the Austin Peay attack. Junior Kirstin Distler added 10 kills.
Austin Peay won the offensive battle with a 47-31 margin in kills and a more efficient attack, posting a .257 attack percentage while limiting EIU to a .144 mark.
Eastern Illinois did not have a player reach double-digit kill territory, Melanie Boykins and Kelsey Orr each registering a team-best seven kills.
The Lady Govs return to action at 2 p.m., Saturday, when they travel to Southeast Missouri.
