Balanced Lady Govs attack leads to third consecutive sweep victory

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. ? Four hitters recorded double-digit kills and Austin Peay State University's volleyball team posted its third Ohio Valley Conference consecutive sweep, downing Southeast Missouri, 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-18), Saturday afternoon.

Austin Peay improved to 14-6 overall and gained sole possession of third place in the league standings while improving to 6-2 overall. Southeast Missouri fell to 7-7 overall and 5-3 in conference action.

As has been the case all season, the Lady Govs featured a balanced offensive attack with four players reaching double-digit kill territory. Junior Kirstin Distler posted a team-best 12 kills and an impressive .474 attack percentage. Junior transfer Stephanie Champine added 11 kills while sophomores Jessica Mollman and Taylor Skinner each chipped in 10 kills.

Austin Peay finished with 52 kills and a .348 attack percentage. They also scored six service aces ? three by freshman Kayla Grantham ? while not allowing a Southeast Missouri service ace.

“We did a good job running our offense today,” said Lady Govs head coach Jenny Hazelwood. “We were able to keep Southeast Missouri off guard because we were able to mix up our attack and keep them off guard.”

Claire Keaton led Southeast Missouri with 12 kills and a .524 attack percentage. Aubrey Dondlinger chipped in 11 kills. The Redhawks posted 47 kills and a .327 attack percentage.

Austin Peay starts a four-match home stand when it hosts Eastern Kentucky in a 7 p.m., Friday, contest at the Dunn Center.
