MURRAY, Ky. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team lost a 1-0 Ohio Valley Conference match, Friday, at league-leading Murray State. The Lady Govs fall to 4-11-2 with a 1-4-2 conference record. The Racers, meanwhile, clinched their first-ever OVC regular-season title with a 6-1 league clip and a 10-5-2 overall record.
Murray State continued its tear through the OVC, using physical play and a patient offensive attack to undo Austin Peay. The Lady Govs issued the first strike as freshman Jocelyn Murdoch put a shot on goal fewer than thirty seconds into the match.
The Racers answered and scored the game's first goal at the 17:12 mark. Katie Wilson served a cross in front of the goal and Sophie Hargreaves headed it in for her season's fifth goal. Murray State went on to outshoot Austin Peay, 23-6, for the match, including a 15-2 second-half advantage.
“We continued to have problems finding the back net,” said Lady Govs head coach Kelley Guth. “Murray State is a good team and they played strong against us. Our execution in the attacking third is just not where it needs be. We had some opportunities, but we couldn't get it done.”
Sophomore Carley Newman had seven saves for the Lady Govs, while freshman Alanna Foster's two shots led the offense.
Rebekah Clay had seven shots, four on goal, to lead Murray State. Hargreaves finished with five shots. Racer keeper Tara Isbell had two saves in net.
Austin Peay wraps up OVC play with a 2 p.m., Sunday match at UT Martin.
