Governors hold off Tennessee Tech for homecoming win

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay back-up quarterback Trent Caffee completed 14-of-20 passes for 217 yards and 4 touchdowns, leading the Govs to a 31-28 homecoming win against Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee Tech, Saturday.

It was the Governors first win this season after starting the season 0-7. The Govs also improved to 1-4 in the OVC. Tennessee Tech fell to 3-6 overall, 1-4 ikn the OVC. It was the Golden Eagles fourth straight loss.  

Justin Kraemer's 32-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right, ending the Golden Eagles potential game-tying drive as time expired. Tennessee Tech set up the drive after two fourth-quarter scores ? a 1-yard rush by Cedric Wilkerson and a 20-yard TD pass from Lee Sweeney to Tim Benford.

Austin Peay led 31-14 heading into the final frame. But the Golden Eagles scored two late fourth-quarter TDs in matter of three minutes before recovering an onside kick wigth 1:33 left. Tennessee Tech, with the use of two Austin Peay pass interference penalties, moved the ball to the APSU 15 before Kraemer's bid for overtime slipped right. It was his fourth straight missed field goal.  

Meanwhile, Caffee, making his season's first season start after T.C. Jennings was sideline by illness, came out strong, opening the game with a 75-yard TD strike to Darryl Miller. The Govs took a 24-7 lead into the half after three Caffee touchdown passes and a 29-yard field goal by John Bell. Tennessee Tech got on the board with a 12-yard, Sweeney-to-Benford, score.

In the third, Sweeney hooked up with Henry Sailes for a 79-yard touchdown cutting the Govs lead to 10 points, 24-14. Austin Peay's Miller caught his third TD, a 20-yard Caffee pass, with 1:08 left in the third for the Govs final score.

Miller was a popular target for Caffee, finishing with 110 yards receiving and three scores. Meanwhile, Ryan White, who came off the bench when starter Theo Townsend injured his knee, led the Govs rushing attack with 185 yards on 22 carries, averaging 8.4 yards per rush. It was the second straight game the Govs had a rusher gain more than 100 yards.

Caffee, APSU's third string quarterback entering the season, finished the night 14 of 20 for 217 yards and four TD passes. It was the first time since Oct. 20, 2001, that an APSU quarterback threw four TD passes in a single game (Brian Baker threw five that day against Kentucky Wesleyan).

Sweeney threw for 324 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Benford caught 10 passes for 123 yards.

Defensively, Daniel Becker led the Govs with 10 stops, including a sack. LaDarius Davis snatched an interception.
