CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Trent Caffee, who threw four touchdown passes in Austin Peay State University's 31-28 win against Tennessee Tech, has been selected Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week in a vote of league sports information directors.
Meanwhile teammate Ryan White, who came off the bench to rush for 185 yards in the victory, has been chosen as the OVC's Newcomer of the Week.
Caffee, making his first start this season in place of T.C. Jennings (illness), completed 14 of 20 passes for 217 yards and had TD strikes of 75, 12, 15 and 20. Three of the TD passes were to fellow sophomore Darryl Miller. In fact, the two hooked up on the 75-yard strike on Caffee's first pass of the game .
The Aledo, Texas native became the first Gov to throw for four touchdowns since Brian Baker tossed five against Kentucky Wesleyan, Oct. 20, 2001; his first quarter 75-yard strike to Miller was the Govs' longest play from scrimmage this season and was the longest pass play since Lanis Frederick's 72-yard reception against Morehead State, Oct. 15, 2005.
Meanwhile, White, who also was a teammate of Caffee's at Brentwood Academy, entered the game late in the first quarter when running back Theo Townsend suffered an apparent leg injury. The redshirt freshman finished the first half with 84 yards rushing and then added 101 more in the second.
The 185 yards were the highest rushing yard total by a Gov since Chris Fletcher ran for 196 yards against Samford, Oct. 20, 2007. His 41-yard third-quarter run was the Govs longest rush of the season.
The former Brentwood Academy duo led Austin Peay to a season-high 480 yards in total offense as the Govs recorded not only its season's first win in eight tries but as well as its first OVC win this season and its first 2008 Sergeant York Trophy series victory.
