Lady Govs downed by Racers come-from-behind effort

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University's volleyball team won the first two sets of its Ohio Valley Conference contest only to watch visiting Murray State put together a huge come-from-behind to overcome that deficit and five match points to win, 3-2 (17-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-20, 18-16), Friday night, at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay falls to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play and falls into a third-place tie with Murray State which improves to 6-9 overall and 3-2 in league action.

The Lady Govs dominated the early portion of the decisive fifth set, building a 8-3 lead before the mid-set changeover. After that short intermission, the Racers moved within three points, 9-6, but could get no closer as a kill by senior Jessica Mollman gave APSU match point at 14-9. However, Murray State staved off five consecutive match points to tie the set at 14-14 and took a 15-14 lead on a sixth consecutive point. The Lady Govs would get a side out to stop that run, but could not stop the momentum as the Racers freshman Logan Su posted back-to-back kills to finish the match.

Austin Peay looked dominant early, winning the match's first two sets in convincing fashion. The Lady Govs posted a .333 hitting percentage while committing three attack errors in set one. The second set was a closer affair as the Lady Govs cooled slightly to a .250 attack percentage while committing four errors.

Murray State came back from the mid-match break and dominated the third set, hitting a match-best .289 and committing one attack error. Austin Peay did little to help its own cause, committing 10 attack errors and hitting a match-worst .062. The Racers kept the momentum going in the fourth set, recording a .220 attack percentage while the Lady Govs continued to struggle with a .137 attack percentage and eight attack errors.

“I am concerned with the way we played the last three sets,” said Lady Govs head coach Jenny Hazelwood. “If we play the way we can ? as we did in the first two sets ? we are a very tough team to beat. But if we play not to lose like we did in the last three sets we will struggle in conference play. I keep telling our team that we can't take anyone for granted in conference play ? we have to show up ready to give our best effort. Give Murray State credit, they didn't quit after being down two sets and then five match points. But we also have to be able to finish matches to be successful.”

Four Austin Peay players reached double-digit kill territory. Mollman led the Lady Govs with 18 kills, junior transfer Stephanie Champine added 16 kills, junior Kirstin Distler added 14 kills with a team-best .344 attack percentage and freshman Taylor Skinner added 13 kills.

Su led all hitters with 19 kills and added five blocks to finish with 23 points. Sophomore Becca Lamb added 16 kills and senior Alison Mugler chipped in 13 kills. The Racers were outhit, 71-67, but were more efficient with a .217 attack percentage against APSU's .200 mark.

Austin Peay closes out its three-match homestand with a 2 p.m., Saturday, contest against Tennessee Martin.
