Lady Govs unable to solve Racers

MURRAY, Ky. ? Austin Peay State University's volleyball team cannot figure out a way to down Murray State, falling 3-2 (27-29, 25-22, 23-25, 25-13, 11-15), in Ohio Valley Conference action, Saturday, at Racer Arena.

Austin Peay drops to 18-8 overall and 10-4 in conference play, moving back to third place with the loss. Murray State improves to 12-12 overall and 9-5 in league action to move into a fourth-place tie.

Both team's offenses had their way all day ? Austin Peay finishing with 78 kills and a .317 attack percentage while Murray State had 76 kills and a .320 attack percentage. The Lady Govs 78 kills were the second most in the OVC this season while the Racers 76 kills ranks third this season.

“It was the hard-fought match we've come to expect when we play Murray State,” said Lady Govs head coach Jenny Hazelwood. “There were long rallies throughout the match and it came down to getting the small things done. We played well throughout the match, but we weren't able to get enough bounces our way.”

Junior transfer Stephanie Champine led the Lady Govs with a career-high 24 kills and an impressive .444 attack percentage. The 24 kills the most by any APSU player this season. Sophomore Jessica Mollman added a career-high 22 kills. Sophomore Taylor Skinner added 12 kills and junior Kirstin Distler chipped in 10 kills.

Ashley Nenninger led Murray State with 20 kills, one of four MSU players to reach double-digit kill territory.

Austin Peay returns to action with a 7 p.m., Tuesday, home non-conference tilt against Belmont.
