Lady Govs end road schedule with win

RICHMOND, Ky. ? The season's final road trip proved successful as Austin Peay State University's volleyball team posted a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) Ohio Valley Conference victory at Eastern Kentucky, Tuesday night.

Austin Peay improved to 19-10 overall and 11-5 in conference play, moving back into a third-place tie with idle Murray State. Additionally, the Lady Govs finished 10-6 away from the Dunn Center during the regular season, securing their first winning record on the road since 1998 (12-10). Eastern Kentucky falls to 6-22 overall and 4-13 in league play.

Sophomore Sarah Alisaleh helped Austin Peay get off to a quick start recording two service aces en route to a 4-0 lead. Eastern Kentucky rallied back to take the lead, 10-9, after an APSU attack error. The teams traded points and the lead several times with an EKU service aces tying the game, 21-21, for the last time. The Lady Govs got back-to-back kills from junior Stephanie Champine followed by consecutive EKU attack errors to grab the 25-21 victory.

Alisaleh would have a hand in helping the Lady Govs grab the second set, standing at the service line for six straight points, turning a 10-10 tie into a 16-10 APSU lead. The Colonels would get back within four, 21-17, but could not get any closer. Kills from Kayla Grantham and Taylor Skinner would seal the 25-19 victory.

Austin Peay would leave no doubt in the third set, scoring 12 of the first set's first 16 points. Eastern Kentucky would close within four points, 17-13, but Austin Peay scored four points to seal the win, 25-18.

“Tonight was a step in the right direction,” said Lady Govs head coach Jenny Hazelwood. “We still have work to do before we're back to our old selves, but we had a good performance all around tonight.”

Champine snapped out of her two-game slump to lead Austin Peay with 12 kills while posting a .379 attack percentage. Freshman Kayla Grantham added 10 kills and a .348 attack percentage. Austin Peay finished with 45 kills and posted a .238 attack percentage.

Amanda Wilson led Eastern Kentucky with 12 kills, but the Colonels posted just 29 kills in the contest.

Austin Peay closes out its regular-season schedule with a pair of home matches this weekend. First up is a 7 p.m., Friday contest against fifth-place Southeast Missouri. The Lady Govs close their home schedule with a 2 p.m., Saturday affair against Eastern Illinois.
