CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Junior Kirstin Distler posted a team-best 13 kills to lead Austin Peay State University to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-21) Ohio Valley Conference victory against Southeast Missouri, Friday night, at the Dunn Center.
The Lady Govs improve to 20-10 overall and 12-5 in league play, posting their first 20-win campaign since 1999. Southeast Missouri falls to 12-13 overall, 10-7 in conference action and secure in fifth place in the league standings.
The first set was closely fought as the two teams traded the lead once and settled on seven ties in the early going. However, a 6-1 Austin Peay run turned an 8-8 tie into a 14-9 lead they would not relinquish. The second and third sets, while close in score, were controlled by Austin Peay the entire way.
“I feel like we played aggressive and accomplished our game plan,” said Lady Govs head coach Jenny Hazelwood. “The last couple of games we have gotten back to that style of play and it could not have come at a better time with the conference tournament coming up.”
Distler had an impressive night, posting a .464 attack percentage along with her 13-kill performance. Freshman Kayla Grantham added 11 kills as the Lady Govs needed just 47 kills to post the sweep. Austin Peay also posted leads in blocks, 9-5, and service aces, 5-1.
Southeast Missouri's Aubrey Dondlinger led all hitters with 14 kills. Claire Keaton added 12 kills and Southeast Missouri had 43 kills but also recorded 19 attack errors to finish with a .171 attack percentage.
